Six checks before you pay $10 a month for an AI desktop app.

The category is new, the claims are loud, and the price is small enough to subscribe without thinking. These are the questions worth answering first — and how this particular app answers them, in its own words and at its own price.

First month $7 then $10/month · auto-renews · cancel anytime

We earn a commission if you subscribe through our link; the price you pay is the vendor's, not ours. The straight answers — including who this is not for — are further down.

01 — THE SIX CHECKS

What to verify before you subscribe to any of these tools

Ask these six questions of every desktop AI app. Below each one is how this app answers, including the part the marketing page leaves out.

01

Does it work on your files, or only on pasted text?

Chat tools stop at what you copy into them. A desktop agent should reach the actual folder.

Here: yes — it reads PDFs, spreadsheets and exports from folders you authorise, and can write the result back out as a file.

02

Will it ask before it deletes or overwrites?

An agent with write access is one mistaken step away from an empty folder.

Here: file access is granted per permission, and destructive actions require confirmation before they run. The permission boundary is the safety feature.

03

Are your documents used to train models?

For client work, contracts and anything with a name on it, this is the deciding question.

Here: the vendor states your data is never used for training and is encrypted at all times, with SOC-2 Type-2 and HIPAA compliance. That is their statement — worth reading in their terms before you put regulated material through it.

04

Can you cancel without an email chain?

If cancellation requires a phone call, assume you will forget and keep paying.

Here: cancellation sits in the app — profile menu, then Billing and Invoices. Access continues to the end of the month already paid for.

05

Is the renewal price written down?

A promotional first month is fine. Discovering month two by bank statement is not.

Here: $7 for the first month, then $10 per month, auto-renewing until cancelled. The reduced first month is a vendor promotion and can end.

06

Does it replace a tool, or add one?

One more subscription is only worth it if it removes two others.

Here: three tools in one window — a file agent, a meeting listener, and a coding agent with CLI and VS Code extension — plus 100+ models for text, image and video.

02 — SPEC SHEET

The facts, without the adjectives

Everything below is what the vendor publishes. Where something is a claim rather than a measurement, it says so.

Abacus AI Desktop — summary of published terms
ItemDetail
What it isA desktop application with five modes in one window: CoWork (the file-working agent), a coding agent, a command-line agent, chat, and a meeting listener.
PlatformsDesktop app for Windows and Mac; the command-line tool also runs on Linux. Check the vendor's download page for current system requirements.
PriceFirst month $7 at the promotional rate, then $10 per month. Subscription renews automatically until cancelled.
Plan limitsThe entry tier allows a limited number of agent tasks; the higher tier removes that limit and unlocks unrestricted agent use. Prices for that tier are on the vendor's site.
CancellationInside the app: profile menu → Billing and Invoices. Access runs to the end of the paid month; no retention call required.
Your dataVendor states: never used to train models, encrypted at all times, SOC-2 Type-2 and HIPAA compliance for business use.
File accessGranted per permission inside a secure, isolated environment on your machine. Deletions and other destructive steps need explicit confirmation.
Also includedAccess to 100+ AI models for text, image and video through the same subscription, plus agentic browsing.
Best forRepetitive document work on a single computer: expenses, reports, forms, meeting notes. Not a fit for work that has to be right first time, with no human check.

Prices and plan limits are set by the vendor and can change. The amount shown on their checkout page is the one that applies.

03 — FIT

Who it suits, and who should keep their money

A promotional page that says “everyone” is not describing a product, it's describing an audience. This one has a shape.

Worth $10 a month if…

  • You handle the same documents every week: invoices, statements, timesheets, supplier lists.
  • You sit in meetings and are the person who ends up writing the notes.
  • Your answers already exist in your own folders, and finding them is the slow part.
  • You'd rather write one clear sentence than learn a prompt framework.

Skip it if…

  • You want software that never makes a mistake. Every tool in this category still needs a human check.
  • Your work is mostly verbal or physical — calls, site visits, sales floors. The value is in files.
  • You won't grant access to a folder. Without it, the app is a chat window you already have.
  • You need a free tool, or you'd have to ask permission to spend $10.
04 — FIRST WEEK

A test that costs you one evening, not one month

Most subscriptions are decided in the first three days and then renewed for a year. Decide on purpose instead.

Day 1

Pick the job you resent

Not the most impressive one — the most repetitive. The monthly expense sheet, the call notes, the form you fill in from the same three documents.

Days 2–3

Give it a copy, not the original

Duplicate the folder, point the agent at the copy, and let it run. Compare its output with what you'd have produced. That comparison is the entire evaluation.

Day 7

Do the maths, then decide

If it saved more than an hour in the first week, month two at $10 is easy to justify. If it didn't, cancel from the billing page before the renewal.

05 — PRICE

What you're actually buying

One subscription, three tools

  • CoWork — the desktop agent that works on your own files
  • Listener — meeting recording, transcription, decisions and action items
  • Coding agent with CLI and VS Code extension
  • 100+ models for text, image and video in the same window
  • Permission-based file access; no training on your documents

Plan limits apply on the entry tier: a limited number of agent tasks, with unrestricted use on the higher tier. The vendor's checkout shows the exact figure for your region.

06 — QUESTIONS

The ones that don't fit in a checklist

Do I need to know anything about prompts or AI?

No. The workload is described in ordinary sentences — “combine these receipts into one sheet and mark anything over budget”. There's no syntax to learn and no library of templates to copy. If you can brief a temp worker, you can brief this.

What if it gets something wrong?

It will, sometimes — especially on messy scans, unusual layouts and anything requiring judgement about your business. Treat the output as a fast first draft: right structure, roughly right content, still needing your eyes. That's why the first-week plan above puts a human comparison in the middle.

Is there a free plan or a trial?

Not for the desktop agent described here — it's part of a paid subscription, with the first month reduced to $7 at the time of writing. Any trial or lower tier the vendor offers will be shown on their own page; we don't promise one that we haven't seen.

Which computer do I need?

Windows or Mac for the desktop app; the command-line tool also runs on Linux. Requirements change with versions, so check the vendor's download page for your machine before you subscribe — the button on this page goes there.

How do I cancel, exactly?

Open the app, use the account menu in the top-right corner, go to your profile, then Billing and Invoices. Cancellation is on that page. You keep access until the end of the month you've already paid for, and the next renewal doesn't happen.

Who wrote this page, and why should I trust it?

It's written by an independent publisher, not by Abacus.AI, and we earn a commission if you subscribe through our link. That's the commercial interest behind it. The reason to trust the details is that they can be checked against the vendor's own pages — and the limitations are printed here rather than omitted.

The short version

If check 01 is the job you hate, the rest of the list is easy.

$7 for the first month, $10 after that, cancel from inside the app. The only thing you risk is an evening spent comparing an output with your own.
